Sayonara, Goo.gl

It seems that all things Google come and go. Some fantastic free products, like Google Code, arrived, flourished for a time, and quietly disappeared. Well, there were complaints, and the upcoming disappearance of Goo.gl, the ubiquitous URL shortener, will be no exception. People are already complaining, because Goo.gl doesn't just shorten long URLs, but keeps statistics on their use.

Not to worry though - Miguel Guhlin at the TCEA blog has written an excellent entry on the latest Google product to go away, and has provided a lot of free options to shorten your long, difficult-to-remember URLs. Miguel also provides some roll-your-own URL solutions based on Amazon Web Services or PHP scripts.
