Code with Code Anywhere

This, the third entry in our coding with Chromebooks series, actually doesn't need a Chromebook to use! You just need your browser.

Code Anywhere is a free, powerful, multiple-language, multiple-OS solution for people who need to learn Javascript, PHP, HTML or 72 other programming languages. It is an Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for any serious programming student on a zero budget. Since  Code Anywhere is browser-based, you can program on your PC or Chromebook. There is even an Android app for your phone!

Code Anywhere has the following features:

  • Editor - highlighting, syntax, code completion. linting, code beautification
  • Remote Connection - connect to FTP, SFTP, Dropbox, or Google Drive
  • Terminal Console - use pre-made development environments, or roll your own
  • Revisions - like a good IDE, Code Anywhere can track your code versions
Please click on this document for more information.

Cons: there are some problems with Code Anywhere. You can use SSH in Code Anywhere to link to other computers, but since that connection is being run through Code Anywhere's servers, it must be considered insecure. Please go to this webpage for more information.

Also, as with Online Compiler, you cannot do network-based programming, or break out of your container. But I think the benefits are worth the drawbacks. Just know that this is a product best used for education, not professional software development.
