Log it Off, Don't Turn it Off

For many years, at the end of our working day, we would shut down our computers and go home. No? Don't shut them down? Not according to Steve Arel, Senior Systems Analyst with our Technology Division. According to Steve: "The District pushes out updates to the machines between the hours of 5:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. each evening in order to get necessary updates that are required to for these computers to work properly on the network."

What kind of updates are we talking about here? Steve says that virus definition updates, browser updates, and even operating system updates are pushed through, and these evening hours are best, as they may take some time to be installed.

Also, at 10:00 p.m. each night, your office computer will shut down automatically in order to save on electricity costs.

What if I insist on shutting down my computer at 5:00? Says Steven: "If the computer user shuts down the computer at the end of their work day, those necessary updates will not be installed."

So how do I log off in Windows 10? Well, it's very simple: Click on the Windows icon, and go to the upper left. Click on your user name, then click Sign Out. (look at the illustration above) and you will be logged off your machine.

So remember, Have you looked? Have you checked?

Log it off,
Don't turn it off.
