Digital Citizenship in Denton ISD by Guest Blogger Donna Kearley

Rhonda Thomas at Strickland Middle
Last year, a team led by Librarians, worked to build and teach a comprehensive Digital Citizenship Curriculum in Denton ISD.  They were aided by Counselors, School Resource Officers, Instructional Technology Specialists, and classroom teachers.
Librarians decided to use the Scope and Sequence from Common Sense Media as their curriculum and to supplement it with other materials as needed.  This Scope and Sequence focuses on teaching students about Self-Image and Identity, Digital Footprint and Reputation, Information Literacy, Privacy and Security, Relationships and Communication, Cyberbullying and Digital Drama, Internet Safety, and Creative Credit and Copyright.  It also includes staff development for educators and a parent education component.

As part of this process, librarians and schools became Common Sense Media certified and the district earned certification as well.

On September 27, 2016, The Denton ISD Board of Trustees will recognize librarians for the accomplishment of becoming a Common Sense Media Certified School District.
